Nyimbo zaKwatu - Our Music

Nyimbo zaKwatu, which translates to “Our Music” in the Sena language, is a dynamic cultural platform dedicated to celebrating Africa’s rich and diverse artistic heritage. Rooted in Zimbabwe and extending across the African continent, Nyimbo zaKwatu offers immersive experiences that showcase authentic rhythms, dances, and storytelling traditions, while creating meaningful dialogue between traditional and contemporary forms of expression.
The platform originated in June 2023 as a series of intimate concerts curated by Zimbabwean artist Mary Anibal. Initially conceived as personal performance spaces, these gatherings quickly evolved in response to a growing need for broader audience engagement and inclusive creative representation. Recognising the lack of accessible platforms for emerging and established artists with a shared commitment to cultural preservation, Mary expanded the concept to intentionally include musicians, poets, spoken word artists, dancers, visual artists, and women entrepreneurs. Early featured artists included Mary Anibal, Cleo Arie, Josh Meck, Victor Kunonga, Carlo Music, Nasibo, and Vazukuru VeAfrika.
In March 2025, the intimate concert series was officially rebranded as Nyimbo zaKwatu, marking the debut of its first edition. This landmark event, held in collaboration with Katikitiki Stage, celebrated women in Zimbabwe’s creative industries, bringing together musicians, poets, fashion designers, visual artists, authors, and women-owned small businesses in a powerful showcase of women’s empowerment. The edition was headlined by Prudence Katomeni Mbofana, Batsirai Chigama, and Mary Anibal.
Later in November 2025, Nyimbo zaKwatu presented its second edition, which achieved resounding success and featured nine creatives across multiple disciplines. Headlining and featured artists included Mary Anibal, Josh Meck, Wowrae, Skai & the Legacy Band, Khaya Lami Band, USAP Mbira Club, Thithukani Ndlovhu, Linda Gabriel, and Matamba Film Labs for Women.
Nyimbo zaKwatu continues to transcend boundaries between traditional and contemporary music by providing a vibrant platform for emerging and established talent from Zimbabwe and the broader African continent. Through its programming, the initiative promotes social change, peace, unity, and cultural pride. Since its official launch in March 2025, Nyimbo zaKwatu has attracted over 800 attendees, creating lasting artistic connections and memorable cultural experiences that affirm the power of African creativity.
